Treatment Plans

“Combining a program of strength with balance/stability exercises produces benefits”

The variability of the disease makes it important that multiple options are available. Our exercise plans involve three types of programs:

Strength Enhancement

Early in the week, we focus solely on strength enhancement. Each movement is completed in a seated position where performing the movement with an increased weight load is permitted while eliminating risk. A total body program has been designed to increase upper and lower body strength, as well as the all-important core. Exercises to improve aerobic conditioning are also used as part of the program.

A theraband workout has been designed for those that are unable, or is difficult, to move from one strength station to the next.

Move Towards Balance and Stability

As the week progresses, we continue to focus on the strength component, as well as introduce movements to enhance balance and stability. A vast majority of those diagnosed with multiple sclerosis have balance and gait issues. Several exercises are performed that allows our clients to focus on enhancing their balance issues in a safe environment. We continue to focus on core strength as an important component of each program, as well.

Correcting the 3D Imbalance

The final program focuses on identifying and enhancing what I refer to as 3D imbalances. That is strength is more prominent right-left, top-bottom, and front-back (anterior/posterior). In most cases, those diagnosed with MS, the disease has created one, or more, of these imbalances. We largely use dumbbells to allow for unilateral movement to help increase strength in the weaker areas, yet allowing the client to maintain the strength in the stronger of the areas. Additionally, we focus on the minor muscle groups: rotators, grip strength.
